The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has reaffirmed that Comrade Philip Shaibu remains the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The court rejected an appeal from the Edo State House of Assembly, upholding the earlier judgment by the Federal High Court that overturned Shaibu’s impeachment and required his immediate reinstatement.

The controversy began with Shaibu’s impeachment on April 8, when the Edo State House of Assembly charged him with perjury and leaking confidential information. However, Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court ruled that the impeachment process was flawed and ordered that Shaibu be reinstated.

The Court of Appeal has warned that any individual other than Shaibu attempting to assume the role of Deputy Governor would face legal consequences. The court also nullified the appointment of Omobayo Godwins, who had been designated as Shaibu’s successor.

Moreover, the court instructed the Inspector General of Police to ensure Shaibu’s security so that he can resume his duties as Deputy Governor until his term concludes.

This ruling has further escalated the political discord in Edo State, highlighting ongoing conflicts within the state’s governance.
