Former President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, in a development that has attracted significant political attention ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to The Nation, Jonathan arrived at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa and held a private meeting with Tinubu. The details of the discussion were not disclosed, and no official statement was issued by either side after the meeting.
The reported visit comes at a time of heightened political activity surrounding the 2027 presidential race.
The meeting also follows recent controversy involving a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Turaki, which claimed it had manually submitted its list of candidates for the 2027 elections, including Jonathan as its presidential candidate.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected the claim, insisting that political parties must submit candidates’ details through its approved electronic portal.
Responding to the matter, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Ita-Messi, explained that the commission’s procedures do not permit manual submission of candidates’ lists.
“Political parties are required to submit the names of their candidates through INEC’s designated electronic portal,” she said.
Ita-Messi added that while she could not confirm whether the Turaki-led faction had submitted any list to the commission, manual submission would amount to a violation of established electoral procedures.
The INEC official stated:
“I cannot confirm whether the faction submitted any list of candidates to the commission, but manual submission is not in line with the established process.”
The reported meeting between Jonathan and Tinubu has therefore generated fresh speculation because it occurred shortly after the former president’s name surfaced in the disputed PDP factional nomination claim.
Neither Jonathan nor the Presidency has publicly commented on the purpose of the visit as of the time of filing this report.
