Banex Plaza, a prominent shopping hub in Abuja, has reopened following a week-long closure caused by clashes between soldiers and traders. The plaza resumed operations at 2:30 PM on Monday, May 27, bringing an end to a period of significant business disruption.

The closure was triggered by an altercation involving personnel from the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police and traders, as reported by PoliticsNigeria. The confrontation escalated into physical altercations involving passersby and security guards, leading authorities to shut down the facility temporarily to ensure public safety and order.

The decision to reopen was made after successful negotiations between the traders involved in the altercations and military authorities. This resolution has provided relief to many business owners and customers who frequent the busy electronics and telecommunications market.

The initial clash that led to the closure occurred when four military police personnel retaliated against traders following a previous disagreement, prompting the Nigerian Army to take the drastic measure of closing the market for a week.

The reopening marks a return to normalcy and the restoration of business activities at one of Abuja’s key commercial centers.

In a related development, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has condemned the closure of Banex Plaza by the Nigerian Army. Obi expressed his concerns on his official X handle, criticizing the incident and its aftermath as a manifestation of the nation’s growing tension and intolerance.

The resolution and reopening of Banex Plaza are anticipated to bring relief to the affected traders and customers, restoring the vibrant commercial activity that the plaza is known for.
