FG Issues Flood Alert for 19 States as Heavy Rains Expected

The Federal Government has warned of impending heavy rainfall across 19 states that could lead to severe flooding over the next five days, affecting 76 locations nationwide.

The National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment issued the alert on Tuesday, calling on residents and stakeholders in vulnerable areas to take immediate precautionary steps.

Five-Day Rainfall Window Poses Flooding Risk

The weather forecast indicates that intense rainfall will occur from Tuesday, August 5, through Saturday, August 9, 2025, with high probability of flooding and associated dangers in susceptible communities.

The warning comes as flood disasters have already struck multiple states this week, with Ogun and Gombe experiencing devastating floods on Tuesday that submerged several communities. Lagos, Plateau, Anambra, and Delta states have similarly faced recent flood incidents.

76 Locations Across Northern and Middle Belt States at Risk

The flood prediction covers extensive areas across Nigeria’s northern and middle belt regions. Kebbi State has the highest number of vulnerable locations with 13 areas including Bagudo, Birnin-Kebbi, Bunza, Gwandu, Jega, Kalgo, Kamba, Kangiwa, Shanga, Ribah, Sakaba, Saminaka, and Yelwa.

Kano State follows with eight locations: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tundun-wada, Wudil, and Kunchi. Bauchi State has six identified areas including Tafawa-Balewa, Azare, Jama’are, Kari, Misau, and Jama’a.

Other significantly affected states include Benue with eight locations (Agaku, Buruku, Gboko, Igumale, Ito, Katsina-Ala, Ugba, Vande-Ikya), Jigawa with six areas (Diginsa, Gumel, Dutse, Gwaram, Hadejia, Miga), and Akwa-Ibom with five locations (Edor, Eket, Ikom, Oron, Upenekang).

Single Locations in Several States Also Threatened

Multiple states face threats in specific locations: Kaduna (Jaji, Kafancha, Birnin-Gwari, Zaria), Katsina (Bindawa, Bakori, Daura, Funtua), while Plateau (Mangu), Zamfara (Anka), Borno (Biu), and Gombe (Bajoga) each have single locations at risk.

The remaining affected states include Cross-River (Ogoja Edor, Obubra), Ebonyi (Abakaliki, Echara, Ezilo), Nasarawa (Keana, Keffi, Wamba), Niger (Kontagora, Rijau, Ringim), Taraba (Donga, Takum), Yobe (Machina, Potiskum), and Sokoto (Sokoto, Wamakko).

The government urged residents in these areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations as weather conditions deteriorate across the identified regions.
