Russia has declared its firm support for Cuba following controversial remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting he could “take” control of the Caribbean nation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Russia’s foreign ministry expressed “unwavering solidarity” with the Cuban government and people, while warning against what it described as interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. Moscow also criticized unilateral sanctions and intimidation tactics, reaffirming its long-standing opposition to U.S. pressure on Havana.
The reaction comes amid heightened tensions after Trump told reporters at the White House that he believed he would have the “honor” of taking Cuba, adding that the United States could act freely toward the island.
The developments coincide with a worsening crisis inside Cuba, where a nationwide power outage recently left millions without electricity. The blackout—one of several in recent months—highlights the country’s fragile energy infrastructure and deepening economic challenges.
Cuba has struggled for decades under economic hardship marked by shortages of fuel, food, and electricity, conditions widely linked to longstanding U.S. sanctions. The situation has deteriorated further following restrictions on oil supplies, which have disrupted power generation and intensified daily hardships for residents.
Russia said it remains in close contact with Cuban authorities and is prepared to provide assistance, including financial support, as the island confronts what it described as “unprecedented” economic and energy difficulties.
Reports also indicate that Washington is increasing pressure on the Cuban leadership, with signals pointing to possible political changes in Havana, although no official confirmation has been issued.
The latest tensions reflect a continuation of Cold War-era alignments, with Moscow maintaining close ties to Havana since the 1959 revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power. Russia has consistently opposed U.S. sanctions on Cuba and has pledged to support the island’s sovereignty and economic stability.
