In the ongoing power tussle between Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Fubara has defiantly asserted that he will not cede power to Wike and those attempting to oust him from office. The two political figures have been engaged in a struggle for control over Rivers State resources and political structures.
President Bola Tinubu, in a bid to quell the crisis, had mandated both Wike and Fubara to sign a peace pact. Despite this intervention, Governor Fubara has made it clear that he will not relinquish his office and will continue working towards the development of the state.
Speaking during the crossover service at St. Paul’s Archdeaconry Parish in Opobo Town on New Year’s Eve, Governor Fubara addressed the gathering, reassuring them of his commitment to the welfare and progress of Rivers State.
“I want to urge everyone of us here, don’t be frightened. What they want is this red biro; it is still with me. They have failed. You are the winner; we are the winner because we are still signing with the red biro. And, so long as we are signing with the red biro, development will continue in Rivers State,” declared Governor Fubara.
He emphasized that his initial commitment to the people was made before assuming the position of governor, and he intends to stand by it. The defiant stance of Governor Fubara adds to the complexity of the political situation in Rivers State, where the power struggle continues to unfold.
