The Minister of Interior, Dr. Tunji Ojo has announced the release of 468 inmates from Kuje Correctional Centre as part of ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities. The minister highlighted that the move was essential due to the prison’s overcapacity, emphasizing that the facility designed for 500 inmates currently houses 750.

Dr. Ojo revealed that the initiative targets inmates with fines not exceeding N1 million, and over 4,000 prisoners nationwide are set to benefit from this prison decongestion program. He further aligned this effort with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Many beneficiaries, ranging from ages 20 to 45, expressed gratitude, citing their participation in vocational skills programs such as plumbing, building, shoemaking, carpentry, electrical work, poultry, and tailoring during their incarceration. The minister provided startup funds to support their reintegration into society.

Dr. Tunji Ojo urged the public to embrace the released inmates, emphasizing the importance of avoiding stigmatization. He expressed concern that societal rejection might lead individuals back to criminal activities, urging communities to welcome them with understanding and support.

Encouraging the freed inmates to lead crime-free lives, the minister stated, “You have all been given a second chance in life to amend your ways and contribute positively to Nigerian society.”
