The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has scheduled the screening of former President Goodluck Jonathan as its sole presidential aspirant ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The screening exercise is expected to take place on Tuesday as part of the party’s ongoing preparations for the next electoral cycle.
According to details released by the faction, a 14-member screening committee has been constituted to oversee the exercise. The committee includes former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi.
Other members of the panel are Olabode George, Babangida Aliyu, Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Abdul Bulama, Esther Uduehi, Edo State PDP Chairman Tony Aziegbemi, Sunday Solarin and Anicho Okoro, who will serve as administrative secretary.
Although the statement issued by the faction did not directly mention the identity of the lone presidential aspirant, party sources familiar with the development told ThisDay that the aspirant is Jonathan.
Speaking earlier on the development, the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, disclosed that Jonathan recently registered as a member of the PDP during the party’s fresh digital registration exercise approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Ememobong said, “Former President Goodluck Jonathan has completed his registration as a member of the PDP in the ongoing digital registration exercise.”
