The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State has welcomed the recent alignment between former governor Sule Lamido and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a move consistent with the party’s position amid its ongoing leadership dispute.
Speaking on the development, the party’s state spokesperson, Umar Kyari, said Lamido’s decision to back Wike’s camp reflects a shared understanding of the legal realities surrounding the party’s internal crisis.
Lamido had earlier called on party stakeholders to put aside their differences and support Wike’s faction, a stance the Jigawa PDP now says aligns with its own position.
Kyari explained that the controversy revolves around constitutional provisions guiding party leadership, noting that the expiration of the previous executives’ tenure necessitated the formation of a caretaker committee to prevent a leadership vacuum.
According to him, Wike had anticipated the legal implications of the situation, which have now been affirmed by a court ruling recognizing the legitimacy of the caretaker arrangement.
He added that the court’s decision has effectively validated the position long held by Wike’s faction within the party.
Kyari also took a swipe at some PDP governors who had previously opposed Lamido’s ambitions, pointing out that several of them have since defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development he suggested underscores shifting loyalties within the political landscape.
