The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced plans to launch a comprehensive investigation into airstrikes that mistakenly targeted two villages in Sokoto State, resulting in the death of 10 civilians.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Silame Local Government Area, where a fighter jet, reportedly targeting Lakurawa terrorists, inadvertently dropped explosives on innocent civilians. The airstrikes also killed animals and destroyed several homes, according to local residents.
A joint media coordinator for the operation, Abubakar Abdullahi, clarified that the airstrikes were directed at locations believed to be associated with the Lakurawa terrorist group.
Reacting to the incident, NAF spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa defended the operation, stating that the strikes were executed based on reliable intelligence and surveillance.
“The airstrikes were conducted based on credible intelligence from multiple sources, along with confirmatory aerial surveillance,” Akinboyewa said.
He, however, assured the public that reports of civilian casualties would not be ignored and that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the facts.
“Nevertheless, reports of possible harm to civilians will be thoroughly investigated, and we will update you appropriately,” he added.
The incident has sparked outrage and concern among affected communities, with many demanding accountability and justice for the victims. Residents alleged that the operation, aimed at neutralizing terrorists in the region, failed to differentiate between the militants and innocent civilians.
The NAF’s commitment to investigating the tragic event comes as stakeholders continue to advocate for improved precision in military operations to avoid unintended casualties.
