The administration of Donald Trump has announced that his signature will be featured on U.S. dollar bills, marking a historic departure from long-standing currency traditions.

According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the initiative forms part of activities commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. Historically, U.S. paper currency has only carried the signatures of the Treasury secretary and the treasurer, a practice that dates back to 1861.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the decision, describing it as a fitting recognition of the president’s economic legacy. He stated that placing Trump’s signature on the currency reflects what he called the president’s role in driving a “Golden Age economic revival.”

The move represents the first time a sitting U.S. president’s name will appear on paper currency, breaking with more than a century of precedent. Traditionally, currency design and signatures have excluded the serving president, maintaining a separation between political office and monetary symbolism.

The announcement comes amid ongoing economic concerns across the United States, with many citizens grappling with inflation and a rising cost of living. Increased oil prices linked to tensions involving Iran have further compounded public unease.

In addition to the currency update, Trump is also set to be featured on commemorative 24-karat gold coins approved by a federal commission as part of the anniversary celebrations. However, the coin design still awaits final authorization from the Treasury.

This is not the first time Trump’s name has appeared on official financial instruments. In 2020, his name was included on COVID-19 stimulus checks issued to Americans during the pandemic.

The latest development is seen as part of broader efforts to cement the president’s legacy across federal institutions. His name has also been associated with prominent establishments such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the United States Institute of Peace, as well as various policy initiatives and proposed national projects.
