Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North senatorial district, has stated that he has no intention of pursuing the governorship of the proposed Anioma State.
He clarified that his support for the state’s creation is rooted in a strong commitment to the welfare and advancement of his constituents at the national level.
Speaking at the Anioma stakeholders summit held over the weekend in Asaba, Senator Nwoko addressed the rumors about his alleged gubernatorial ambitions, firmly denying any such interest. He emphasized that his primary focus is on improving the lives of his people rather than seeking political power.
“My goal is to secure freedom for my people,” Nwoko declared. “The first governor of Anioma State should come from Ndokwa land. Despite being home to three oil-producing local government areas, the Ndokwa region remains neglected, with its environment suffering from severe degradation.”
The lawmaker argued that the Ndokwa region, despite its significant economic contributions through oil production, has long been marginalized and deserves the opportunity to lead the new state.
Nwoko also underscored the broader benefits of state creation, drawing a comparison to the formation of Delta State from the former Bendel State. He noted that statehood has the potential to drive development, pointing to Asaba’s transformation from a small village into a thriving city after becoming the capital of Delta State.
He further highlighted the political advantages of establishing Anioma State, such as increased representation in the Senate, House of Representatives, and state assembly.
