General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, has declared that individuals flying Russian flags in Nigeria are committing a treasonable offense.
Speaking to reporters after an emergency security session with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock on Monday, Musa emphasized that such actions will not be tolerated and vowed that the law will catch up with those responsible.
“We wanted to brief Mr. President on the current situation. Since the riots began, all security agencies have been working together. Initially, the protests were described as peaceful, but we have since observed individuals exploiting the situation to cause chaos, including looting and criminal activities,” Musa stated.
He condemned the flying of foreign flags within Nigeria, describing it as unacceptable and a serious offense. “We will not accept anyone flying a foreign flag within the sovereignty of Nigeria. This is a treasonable offense and will be treated as such. No individual should allow themselves to be used for such actions,” he warned.
Musa also addressed concerns about potential coups, affirming Nigeria’s commitment to democracy. “Nigeria is a sovereign and democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend and ensure the continuity of democracy. We will not accept any actions aimed at changing the government through undemocratic means,” he asserted.
He highlighted the involvement of young individuals in the protests and the investigation into those orchestrating these activities. “Many of those flying the flags are youths being manipulated. We are tracking those behind this and will take serious action against them,” Musa said.
President Tinubu has given clear instructions to maintain peace and stability in Nigeria. “We are working closely with all security agencies to ensure peace and tranquility in Nigeria. The military will intervene if the situation escalates. Flying foreign flags in Nigeria is crossing a red line, and those responsible will face prosecution,” Musa concluded.
