In a significant development, nine individuals have been apprehended in Delta State in connection with the killings of police officers in the Ughelli area of the state. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed the arrests during a force management meeting on Thursday.
According to the police chief, the arrested suspects are currently providing valuable information to aid in the apprehension of those responsible for the tragic killings.
The incident in question occurred on February 23, 2024, when six police officers lost their lives at Ohoro forest in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Despite these arrests, six other suspects linked to the killings are still at large.
This unfortunate event coincided with another tragedy in Delta State, where 16 military personnel were also murdered while on a peace mission in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area.
The loss of these soldiers prompted widespread outrage and condemnation across the nation. At their burial ceremony last week, military authorities vowed to track down the perpetrators of the attack, reaffirming their commitment to combating criminal activities in the country.
President Bola Tinubu honored the fallen soldiers by bestowing posthumous national awards upon them. Additionally, he announced scholarships to support the education of their children, recognizing their sacrifice for the nation.
As investigations continue and arrests are made, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families, while also intensifying efforts to maintain security and peace in the region.
