Iran has proposed a seven-day arrangement that could pave the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of negotiations with the United States.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi disclosed the proposal on Thursday, September 24, while speaking with reporters in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Araghchi, Tehran transmitted the proposal to Washington through mediators as both countries explored diplomatic options for addressing the ongoing conflict.
He said Iran would reopen the strategic waterway at the end of the seven-day period if the conditions attached to the proposal were met.
“We have introduced a plan to the United States through the intermediators that if certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz would be open at the end of the seventh day and talks would restart,” Araghchi said.
The Iranian minister, however, declined to disclose the specific conditions contained in the proposal.
He said the demands were within the framework of issues previously agreed upon by Iran and the United States in June.
Reports cited by the source indicated that the proposal was delivered through an intermediary as Tehran and Washington considered diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.
A White House official also confirmed that discussions between the two sides were taking place through mediators, describing them as “positive and constructive discussions.”
The latest development follows indirect talks between Iranian and US representatives on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, marking the first such discussions between the two countries in several months.
The talks are part of efforts to seek a diplomatic resolution to the conflict and address the dispute surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials have previously linked the reopening of the waterway to a reduction in US military pressure and the lifting of restrictions on Iranian ports.
Iranian state media also reported that Tehran had demanded the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and an end to fighting on all fronts.
