The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement was made on Monday by Gwarzo’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who said the decision followed a series of consultations with party leaders and key stakeholders across the state.
According to Shuaibu, the choice of Mustapha Kwankwaso was aimed at strengthening the party’s chances in the upcoming election and broadening its support base across Kano.
“The governorship candidate of our great party, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election in Kano State,” Shuaibu stated.
He described the running mate as a dedicated party member whose emergence would help galvanize support for the NDC ahead of the polls.
Shuaibu further noted that the selection reflects the party’s commitment to fostering unity, inclusiveness, and effective representation within its ranks.
“The decision underscores our commitment to building a united and inclusive political platform that represents the interests of all Kano residents,” he added.
Mustapha Kwankwaso is the son of former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. His nomination is expected to deepen the influence of the Kwankwasiyya political structure within the NDC as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general elections.
Political observers believe the move could boost the party’s appeal in Kano, a state widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most significant electoral battlegrounds.
Gwarzo, a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, emerged as the NDC governorship candidate after consultations among party stakeholders and leaders.
