The Borno State Urban Planning and Development Board (BSUPDB) has imposed a ban on street hawking and various unauthorized activities within the Maiduguri metropolis.
The announcement was made on Friday, January 3, by the board’s General Manager, Mr. Limán Mustapha, through a statement shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The directive prohibits street hawking, tricycle operations, and generator repairs in high-traffic areas such as the Maiduguri Post Office and Monday Market. Additionally, activities such as selling engine oil on road reservations, using pedestrian walkways, junctions, and roundabouts for business, as well as dumping construction materials, mixing cement, or constructing boreholes by the roadside, are now outlawed.
According to Mustapha, the enforcement of these measures aligns with the Borno State Urban Planning and Development Law of 2002. He stressed that all individuals and businesses engaged in the prohibited activities must vacate the affected locations immediately.
“The board will have no choice but to arrest and prosecute violators in court,” he warned, emphasizing that the initiative aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more organized urban environment in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.
Residents and business owners were urged to comply with the new regulations to avoid legal consequences. The board called for cooperation in ensuring that the city remains orderly and conducive for all.
