Dangote Refinery has clarified that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has not yet begun lifting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, from its facility. Additionally, the refinery has not set any price for petrol sales to the public.
This clarification was made by Anthony Chiejina, Chief Branding and Communications Officer of Dangote Group, in a statement on Thursday. The statement addressed a report claiming that the NNPC had lifted fuel from the Dangote refinery and was selling it at ₦897 per litre.
Chiejina emphasized that no contractual agreements with NNPC have been finalized, and no official petrol price has been announced by the refinery. He urged the public to disregard any misleading information regarding the matter.
“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading headline published by BusinessDay on Wednesday, 4 September 2024, stating ‘NNPC lifts Dangote Petrol, sells at ₦897 per litre,’” the statement began.
“We want to make it clear that NNPC has not yet commenced lifting refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from our Dangote Petroleum Refinery. Therefore, the issue of setting a price for petrol from our refinery does not arise, as no contracts have been finalized with NNPC,” Chiejina added.
He further explained that the PMS market is regulated by relevant government authorities, meaning Dangote Refinery cannot determine or influence the price of its products.
“We urge the public to disregard the misleading headline, which does not reflect the true situation,” Chiejina concluded, reassuring Nigerians that the refinery is committed to providing high-quality petroleum products nationwide.
