The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has increased in Lagos, with consumers now paying as much as ₦1,400 per kilogramme in some outlets.
The latest increase represents a rise from about ₦1,200 per kilogramme recorded in August 2026, with accredited gas plants in some parts of Lagos selling at around ₦1,300 per kilogramme.
Checks across the state showed that prices varied depending on the location and outlet, while smaller gas plants were reportedly charging between ₦1,350 and ₦1,400 per kilogramme.
Dealers said the price situation was not limited to Lagos, as consumers in some other parts of the country were also paying higher prices.
The National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Inyang Edu, attributed the development to several factors affecting the LPG supply chain.
Edu explained that international market instability, shipping and insurance costs, foreign exchange exposure, transportation expenses and domestic supply constraints were contributing to the increase.
He said, “For Nigeria, the effect is transmitted through several channels: international energy prices, shipping and insurance costs, foreign-exchange exposure, domestic logistics and, most importantly for LPG, the availability and cost of supply into the domestic market.”
According to him, the rising cost of the product at depots has subsequently affected prices charged by marketers and ultimately consumers.
“The immediate consequence is that the cost of LPG has increased along the entire supply chain—from the depot to the LPG plant and ultimately to the consumer,” Edu said.
He added that marketers could not continue selling at previous prices when their replacement costs had increased.
“When the replacement cost of LPG rises at the depot, the marketer cannot continue selling at the previous price without making a loss,” he stated.
Edu further identified transportation, loading, financing, plant operations, personnel, maintenance and other logistics as additional costs that must be recovered before the product reaches consumers.
He expressed concern over the impact of rising LPG prices on households and businesses, noting that cooking gas had become an essential source of energy for millions of Nigerians.
“This is particularly painful for households because cooking gas is no longer a luxury fuel. Millions of Nigerian families, restaurants, bakeries, food vendors, schools, hotels and other businesses now depend on LPG,” he said.
Edu warned that continued increases could force some households to cut down on their LPG consumption or return to firewood and charcoal.
“When LPG becomes unaffordable, some households are forced to reduce consumption or revert to alternative fuels such as firewood and charcoal. That undermines Nigeria’s clean-cooking objectives and can have serious environmental and public-health consequences,” he said.
He also pointed to existing supply challenges in the domestic market, recalling that the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported a year-to-date LPG supply deficit of about 91,966 metric tonnes in June 2026.
According to Edu, the supply shortage has compounded the impact of international price pressures on the Nigerian market.
He said depot prices could change regularly depending on product availability, source of supply, location, logistics and commercial arrangements between suppliers and buyers.
Giving an indication of the current wholesale market, Edu said available information as of September 16, 2026, showed that 20 metric tonnes of LPG in Lagos were being traded within a range of ₦20 million to ₦22.7 million, depending on the supplier and depot.
He said, “As at September 16, 2026, publicly available market information indicates that 20 metric tonnes, MT, transactions in the Lagos market are broadly around ₦20 million–₦22.7 million range, depending on the depot and supplier.”
Edu listed some current market prices, saying Ardova was around ₦22 million, while Stockgap was about ₦22.7 million and Panocean approximately ₦20 million for 20MT.
He noted, however, that other market listings placed the same quantity between ₦19.9 million and ₦20.3 million, reflecting differences among suppliers and locations.
