The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over reports that a Christian woman in Borno State has been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment in a case allegedly linked to the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.
The woman, identified in circulating reports as Lami Samuel Dawa, was reportedly convicted over the matter. However, CAN said it was still verifying the full circumstances surrounding the case, including the legal grounds for the conviction.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the Christian body disclosed that an appeal had been filed, adding that it would allow the judicial process to take its course.
CAN emphasised that every Nigerian has the right to choose and practise a religion without facing intimidation or unlawful punishment.
“The Association believes that every individual has the right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment,” the statement said.
The association called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties involved were protected and that the case was handled in line with the Nigerian Constitution and applicable laws.
It also said it would continue to monitor developments and engage relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different religious beliefs, CAN stressed that religious differences should not undermine the fundamental rights of citizens.
The association noted that the reported incident highlighted the need to uphold freedom of religion and ensure that every Nigerian can freely choose, change or practise their faith.
CAN did not disclose further details of the court proceedings, saying it was still working to establish the precise facts of the case.
