The House of Representatives Committee investigating the activities of the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, to produce the organisation’s self-acclaimed Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, before lawmakers within 48 hours.

The order was issued during the committee’s resumed investigative hearing at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Monday, where the Nigeria Police Force provided an update on its ongoing criminal investigation into allegations surrounding the controversial council.

Appearing on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bashir Abdullahi was instructed to ensure Adeyemi appears before the committee by 12 noon on Wednesday.

The House panel is investigating how the PFIPC allegedly obtained office space at Phase III of the Federal Secretariat in Abuja and secured a ₦1.32 billion allocation in the 2026 Appropriation Act despite allegations that the agency has no legal backing.

Committee Chairman, Yusuf Gagdi, stressed that Adeyemi’s appearance was necessary because of the gravity of the allegations and the institutions reportedly implicated in the matter.

According to Gagdi, the committee requires Adeyemi to personally respond to issues relating to documents before it, noting that the investigation involves the reputation of individuals as well as key government institutions.

He said the panel could not treat the appearance as optional, adding that the suspect’s testimony was essential to enable lawmakers conclude their investigation and submit their report on schedule.

The committee consequently directed its clerk to formally communicate its resolution to the Inspector-General of Police, requesting that Adeyemi be presented before the panel on Wednesday.

Earlier in the hearing, ACP Abdullahi informed lawmakers that although police investigations remain ongoing, Adeyemi has already been arraigned before the Federal High Court on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy and fraud.

He explained that the suspect had been arrested and charged but declined to disclose further details, warning that doing so could interfere with ongoing investigations and judicial proceedings.

According to the police officer, making public comments on matters still before investigators and the courts could prejudice the outcome of the case.

The police, however, confirmed receiving petitions, including one submitted by the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President on October 17, 2025, alleging that Adeyemi falsely presented himself as Director-General of both the Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the PFIPC.

Investigators also confirmed another petition accusing Adeyemi of using the purported position to obtain office accommodation within the Federal Secretariat, seeking approval to recruit about 300 personnel, attempting to secure a $1.3 billion allocation for the alleged agency in the 2026 budget, and planning to organise a World Investment Summit under the council’s name.

During the hearing, lawmakers also compared signatures on documents allegedly issued from the Office of the Chief of Staff with authentic official correspondence obtained by police investigators.

When asked whether both signatures matched, ACP Abdullahi replied, “They are not the same.”

Reacting to the development, Gagdi said the committee was no longer dealing with a single questionable letter but with what appeared to be a wider network of allegedly forged government documents.

He said investigators had so far identified about 29 documents suspected to have been forged, including purported approvals and correspondence attributed to the State House, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Ministry of Finance and other government institutions.

According to the committee chairman, representatives of several affected agencies had already appeared before the panel and denied issuing the documents presented in their names.

Gagdi added that the committee had deliberately avoided pressing the police for information that could jeopardise ongoing criminal investigations, emphasizing that lawmakers would continue their independent probe while allowing security agencies to complete their work.

He noted that the committee’s final report could include recommendations for further action by the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
