A member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State, Fredrick Agbedi, has defended the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential return to active politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Wednesday during an appearance on Arise Television’s morning programme, Agbedi maintained that Jonathan has every constitutional right to seek elective office and argued that Nigerians should appreciate the PDP’s move rather than criticize it.
The lawmaker disclosed that the party had made significant progress in its efforts to draft the former president into the 2027 presidential race.
According to him, “The PDP has spoken severally about Jonathan running and it has almost completed all the processes. The formal handing over of the certificates of returns is in my custody to be presented to Jonathan.”
Agbedi stressed that public service should be viewed as a sacrifice for national development, adding that Jonathan’s previous record in office makes him a suitable candidate to help address Nigeria’s current challenges.
He said, “As a citizen of this country every member of this country should sacrifice for this nation and with the credible transformation he had as President, if PDP wishes to bring the right person to help pull Nigeria out of her precarious situation, what Nigerians should be doing is to commend the PDP and Jonathan because if you don’t sacrifice for your country who else are you going to sacrifice for? Where else are you going to sacrifice?”
The Bayelsa lawmaker further argued that Jonathan’s willingness to return to public service should be welcomed, insisting that serving Nigeria remains a noble responsibility.
“If Jonathan will sacrifice for the betterment of Nigeria and people are saying he shouldn’t do that, where do you expect him to go and serve? He is contesting under the platform of the PDP,” Agbedi stated.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about Jonathan’s possible political comeback and the PDP’s reported efforts to position him for the 2027 presidential election.
