Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has urged members of the party to remain focused ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that his emergence as the party’s flagbearer is not a moment for celebration.
Reacting to his victory in the ADC presidential primaries, Atiku, in a statement shared via his 𝕏 account, said the outcome of the exercise should serve as a rallying point for party members to unite against the ruling (APC).
According to him, the country is currently battling corruption, incompetence, and division under the APC-led administration, adding that the ADC must now channel its energy towards rescuing Nigerians from hardship.
“I must state at this juncture that this is not the time to celebrate. No one was defeated because we are one party, and we all need to recognise the fierce urgency of the moment,” Atiku wrote.
“Therefore, we have to unite, as we pledged before this process, to work to pull our country and our people out of the destructive grip of a corrupt, incompetent and polarising APC government.”
The former presidential candidate also praised the party’s primary election committee for conducting what he described as a peaceful and transparent exercise across the country.
“I thank the primary elections Committee for organising peaceful, free, fair and transparent primaries,” he stated.
“I thank the various leadership organs of our party, the various stakeholders, and volunteers for their hard work and dedication and all our party members and supporters for their efforts, patience and conduct during the process.”
Atiku further told party members that the conclusion of the primaries marks the beginning of a more demanding political task ahead of the 2027 elections.
“With the primaries behind us, the real hard work is about to begin. We have to prepare to campaign hard to win the next general elections in order to begin the difficult process of rescuing our country and its long-suffering people from this government,” he added.
