An outbreak of diphtheria in Kano State has resulted in the deaths of over 40 people, mostly children, with many more hospitalized.
Diphtheria, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, primarily affects the throat and respiratory system, leading to symptoms like sore throat, fever, and a distinctive gray or white coating on the throat and tonsils.
Journalists who visited the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) on Wednesday at about 2:00 PM observed that all three wards were filled, and numerous patients were still waiting for consultations.
An anonymous hospital official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity due to media constraints, reported a significant daily mortality rate. “In the past two weeks, we have been witnessing daily deaths from this disease,” the official stated to Daily Trust.
“Doctors are dealing with a large number of patients each day. Whether you come in the morning or evening, you will see dozens of people waiting for treatment. The hospital has been continuously busy since the outbreak began.”
The official further explained that the hospital is overwhelmed as many local government area hospitals lack the facilities to handle such cases. “Most patients are referred here because our facility is best equipped to manage infectious diseases,” the source added.
Samira Danzaki, whose daughter is receiving treatment at the hospital, shared her experience. “I brought my daughter here on Sunday after she developed a high fever and her neck began swelling. We were referred to this hospital, and thankfully, she is responding well to the treatment,” Danzaki said.
Another patient waiting at the hospital described worsening throat issues following a previous bout of catarrh. “I sought help here because my condition has worsened, and I am struggling with my throat,” the individual said.
