Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has announced a 24-hour curfew in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, effective from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024.
This decision follows consultations with state security agencies and a review of the activities of “unscrupulous individuals” who have exploited the ongoing nationwide protests to incite violence.
The announcement was made through a press release by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere. Governor Mutfwang emphasized the necessity of maintaining peace and commended the residents for their peaceful behavior during the protests.
“The curfew is in the best interest of all citizens, and everyone should comply fully to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” the statement read. The Governor has directed state security agencies to enforce the curfew strictly across the Local Government Area.
Governor Mutfwang issued a stern warning to those planning to instigate further violence, urging them to desist immediately or face severe legal consequences. He called on security agencies to remain vigilant and proactive in preventing any potential disruptions to law and order.
The Governor expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Plateau State, particularly religious leaders, for their steadfast support of the government’s policies and their cooperation during the planned nationwide protest. He praised their commitment to maintaining peace and unity.
“The peaceful conduct of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is commendable. I urge everyone to continue to uphold this culture of peace as we work together to build a united and progressive Plateau,” he stated.
Despite the overall peaceful nature of the four-day #EndBadGovernance protests, certain miscreants armed with weapons such as daggers and machetes vandalized shops and restaurants along Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction in Jos North Local Government Area, stealing food items and other valuables. Security agencies intervened to prevent further escalation of these criminal acts.
Governor Mutfwang reiterated his warning to those contemplating further violence, emphasizing that they would face the full wrath of the law.
