The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice has issued a significant ruling, concluding that the Nigerian government committed human rights violations during its handling of the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

According to reports from Cable News, the court specifically cited the government’s use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos as breaching several international human rights standards.

The ECOWAS court determined that Nigeria’s actions violated articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. These articles encompass fundamental rights such as the right to life, the prohibition of torture and inhuman treatment, and the right to freedom of assembly and expression.

In response to the ruling, the court ordered the Nigerian government to compensate each named victim in the lawsuit with N2 million. This compensation aims to address the harm caused by the government’s actions during the protests, which aimed to end police brutality and reform law enforcement practices in the country.

The court’s decision represents a significant step in holding accountable those responsible for the events surrounding the #EndSARS protests, which drew international attention and condemnation of alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian authorities.

Further details on the implementation of the court’s ruling and the government’s response are expected to be forthcoming in the days ahead.
