On Friday morning, Muhammadu Sanusi II was officially reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano, marking a significant turn of events in Kano State’s political landscape.

This reinstatement follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s decision, announced just 24 hours earlier, to reappoint Sanusi after signing into law a bill that abolished the five emirates created under the administration of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Governor Abba Yusuf, alongside traditional rulers, kingmakers, and other dignitaries attended the reinstatement ceremony held at the Art Chamber of the Kano State Government House. Sanusi, who had previously received his appointment letter, expressed his gratitude and commitment to serving the people of Kano.

The new law, which replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019, dissolves the additional emirate councils that were established by Ganduje. These councils—Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya—were created in December 2019. The controversial restructuring led to Sanusi’s deposition on March 9, 2020.

Sanusi II, previously known as Lamido Sanusi, is a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. His reinstatement comes four years after his removal, restoring him to a prominent traditional and cultural role in the state.
