The House of Representatives has approved a bill seeking an extension of the 2023 supplementary budget following a request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

President Tinubu urged the House to extend the period for implementing the capital component of the 2023 budget from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024. This request was conveyed in a letter read on the House floor by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during Wednesday’s plenary session.

In the letter, President Tinubu also sought an extension of the implementation of the supplementary appropriation act from March 31, 2024, to June 30, 2024, stating that the extension was necessary to ensure the full implementation of the provisions of both acts.

Following the reading of the president’s letter, the lower legislative chamber swiftly passed the bill for first, second, and third readings.

The bill was passed after the House Chief Whip, Bello Kumo, moved a motion in its favor. Kumo emphasized that the president’s request should be granted to extend the implementation of the capital component of the budget in the country’s interest.

Consequently, the bill was read for the third time and passed by the green chamber.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen read the bill on the House floor. President Tinubu stated in the letter read by the Speaker that the bill aims to prescribe improved salaries, allowances, and other fringe benefits for judicial officers and workers.

The executive bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Prescribe the Salaries, Allowances, and Fringe Benefits of Judicial Office Holders in Nigeria and for Related Matters.”
