In a bid to provide an immersive experience for residents amid anxieties surrounding the semi-final stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government of Lagos State has established football viewing centres across the state.
The highly anticipated match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 2024. The winner of this encounter will progress to the final stage of the tournament.
To ensure that football enthusiasts across Lagos can enjoy the excitement of the ongoing AFCON, the Lagos State Government has set up a mega viewing centre at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos. Additionally, a total of 25 viewing centres have been established throughout the state.
This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote and ensure that the unifying sport of football is accessible to people of all ages across Lagos. Nigeria has remained undefeated in the 2023 AFCON, which kicked off on January 13, 2024.
Confirming the establishment of the viewing centres, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated: “Lagos, being the sports capital and the base of the largest supporters of the Super Eagles, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, deemed it fit to provide an opportunity for all fans to watch the match.“
Omotoso expressed hope for a triumphant outcome for the national team and highlighted their capacity and technical prowess.
Apart from the Mega Viewing Centre at Onikan, other centres are located across various areas including Agege Stadium, Abesan Sports Centre, Alimosho LGA Secretariat, Agbado-Oke Odo LCDA Secretariat, and numerous other locations spread across Lagos.
The kick-off for the highly anticipated match is scheduled for 6 pm. Lagos residents are encouraged to take advantage of these viewing centres to enjoy the thrilling encounter between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana.
