The Ogun State House of Assembly has ousted its Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, citing alleged gross misconduct as the grounds for his removal. The assembly, during Tuesday’s plenary session, voted unanimously to remove Oluomo from his position and subsequently elected Oludaisi Elemide as the new speaker.

Of the 36 members in the State Assembly, 18 voted in favor of impeaching Oluomo, accusing him of offenses that include embezzlement and haughtiness, among others, as reported by The Nation. This move follows previous events in 2022 when Oluomo was arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and later released on administrative bail.

The EFCC had apprehended Oluomo at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos after he failed to respond to invitations regarding alleged financial crimes. His release was conditional on returning to the EFCC head office with both the assembly clerk and the accountant.

This recent impeachment underscores the dynamic political landscape in Ogun State, raising questions about governance and accountability within the state legislature.
