Former Governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has reiterated his commitment to revisiting the issue of the Kano emirates, particularly the controversial split initiated by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
Ganduje had divided the Kano emirate into five and subsequently dethroned the then Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi. After the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) secured victory in the last year’s election, Kwankwaso had signaled the intention to review Sanusi’s dethronement and the division of the emirate.
In a recent interview with newsmen in Kano on Friday, Kwankwaso affirmed that the matter of the Kano emirates would be revisited under the new administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination of whether the changes made to the emirate structure would be allowed to stand, corrected, or entirely reconsidered.
“Honestly, it is one of the things that nobody has sat with me to discuss so far, but I am sure we are going to sit and see how to go about it. Is it going to be allowed, demolished, corrected, or whatever? It will be revisited, and what’s supposed to be done will be done,” Kwankwaso stated.
He highlighted that the initial decisions regarding the emirates were made without proper consultation and expressed his belief that certain actions were driven by ill intentions. Kwankwaso emphasized the importance of a comprehensive discussion on the matter to determine the appropriate course of action.
With the Supreme Court validating Governor Abba Yusuf’s election, calls for the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano have gained momentum. The unfolding developments indicate that the issue of the Kano emirates is poised to be a focal point for the new administration.
