In a decisive move to address the growing menace of banditry and criminal activities in Sokoto State and its environs, the Sokoto State government has given its nod for the creation of a local security outfit. The legislation formalizing the establishment of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps was officially signed into law on Thursday, December 28, by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.

The State House of Assembly had earlier approved the governor’s proposal to establish the community guards corps on December 21.

During the signing ceremony held at the Government House, Governor Aliyu clarified that the initiative aimed to complement the security efforts of the administration led by President Bola Tinubu and ensure the safety of the citizens. He underscored that the creation of this outfit was not intended to rival the police force but to work collaboratively with existing security structures.

Governor Aliyu emphasized the importance of the Sokoto Community Guard Corps in addressing the prevailing insecurity, particularly banditry, that has disrupted the traditionally peaceful nature of the state.

“The signing into law of this Sokoto Community Guard Corps is a very important milestone in the lives of this administration. Indeed, we pledge to do everything humanly possible to maintain peace and security in the state,” stated Governor Aliyu.

He highlighted that the establishment of the security guard corps aimed to supplement the efforts of conventional security outfits, especially at the grassroots level, in safeguarding the lives and property of the people.

Governor Aliyu made it clear that the community guard corps was not a replacement for the Sokoto police but a supportive force created by the state government. He urged security agencies to collaborate with the community guards and underscored their crucial role in ensuring a secure state.

“Security agencies, please you should know that they are not your rivals; they are there to assist you, to give you all necessary support and information from their localities,” emphasized the governor.

He concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to ensuring the protection of lives and property in Sokoto State through strategic security measures.
