The Federal Government has scaled down the number of fraud charges against the immediate-past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. The charges, initially numbering 20 and centered around alleged procurement fraud amounting to N6.5 billion, have been reduced to six counts.
The original charges were filed in August, implicating Emefiele alongside a female CBN employee, Sa’adatu Yaro, and her company, April 1616 Investment. In the amended charge sheet, the quantum of the alleged procurement fraud has been revised from N6.9 billion to N1.2 billion.
According to the revised charges, the Federal Government alleges that Emefiele unlawfully acquired 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020, with a total worth of N1.2 billion. Specifically, the former CBN governor is accused of providing a corrupt advantage to Yaro by awarding a contract for the procurement of 37 Toyota Hilux Vehicles valued at N854 million.
The amended charge reads, “That you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, male, adult, sometime in 2018 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did use your position as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria to confer a corrupt advantage on Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, a staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria by awarding a contract for the supply of 37 Toyota Hilux Vehicles at the cost of N854,700,000 only to April1616 Investment Ltd, a company in which the said Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro is a director and thereby committed an offence.”
Emefiele now stands as the sole defendant in the revised charge, facing accusations of using his position to confer corrupt advantages related to vehicle procurement contracts. The reduced charges suggest a recalibration of the prosecution’s case against the former CBN governor. The legal proceedings will continue as Emefiele addresses the accusations levied against him.
