The advisory, which was released on Friday, November 3, 2023, indicates that Nigerian security agencies are actively addressing the perceived threat.
American citizens in Nigeria have been urged to exercise extreme vigilance when visiting major hotels, maintain awareness of their surroundings, keep a low profile, and consult the latest travel advisory for Nigeria before choosing accommodations.
The advisory from the U.S. Embassy states: “The U.S. Government is aware of credible information that there is an elevated threat to major hotels in Nigeria’s larger cities. The Nigerian security services are working diligently to counter the threat. The U.S. Department of State advises U.S. citizens to consider this information when arranging lodging or visiting major hotels in Nigeria.”
For the convenience of U.S. citizens requiring assistance, the notice also provides the contact information for the U.S. embassy in Abuja and the consulate in Lagos.
This cautionary message follows a previous advisory issued by the U.S. government in October, in which all American citizens were encouraged to exercise restraint when traveling to various global locations. Additionally, Nigeria has been classified under the third tier of caution alerts, indicating that travelers should “Reconsider” their plans to visit the country in light of these security concerns.
