Key Highlights of the Lagos Red Line Rail Project

President Bola Tinubu has officially inaugurated the Lagos Red Line rail project, marking a significant milestone in the transportation infrastructure development of Lagos State.

The project, spearheaded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is poised to revolutionize mobility in the city and enhance connectivity across key areas.

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that the Lagos Red Line Mass Transit rail system, covering a 27-kilometer stretch from Agbado to Oyingbo with eight stations, is expected to accommodate over 500,000 passengers daily once fully operational. This initiative aims not only to alleviate traffic congestion but also to stimulate economic growth and foster sustainable development.

Key highlights of the Lagos Mass Transit train project include:

  1. Anticipated to enable 37 trips daily and cater to over 500,000 passengers daily in its first phase.
  2. Spans a length of 27 kilometers, encompassing eight stations from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos State.
  3. Features ten vehicular overpasses and pedestrian bridges to enhance operational efficiency and commuter safety.
  4. Overseen by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) under the state’s Ministry of Transportation.
  5. Aims to ease traffic congestion, reduce road accidents, and enhance commuter safety.
  6. Utilizes a diesel-powered Diesel Multiple Unit system for train operations.
  7. Represents a significant investment in Lagos’ urban transportation infrastructure, with initial cost estimates totaling $135 million under the Greater Lagos Urban Transportation Project managed by LAMATA.
