A group of bakers from various parts of Nigeria has come together to express their opposition to a planned nationwide strike organized by a faction within their industry.
The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria had announced its intention to commence a nationwide strike on February 27, citing the Federal Government’s alleged failure to fulfill agreements made with the association in 2020. Additionally, the association called for the establishment of a price control and monitoring committee, among other measures, to enhance the business environment in the country.
However, in a statement released on Monday, a segment of the baking community, represented by the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria, criticized the decision to proceed with the strike, particularly during a challenging period for Nigerians. They deemed the strike unnecessary and potentially exacerbating the existing situation.
Acting National President of the Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association, Edmund Egbuji, urged all members of the group to refrain from participating in the strike. The statement emphasized the association’s commitment to national welfare and food security, highlighting the importance of maintaining uninterrupted services during this critical time.
“The BOT chairman and the entire members of the board of trustees, in conjunction with the national exco of Supreme Bakers and Confectioners Association of Nigeria, wish to bring to the notice of the general public that Supreme Bakers Association will not embark on a nationwide withdrawal of services (strike) proposed by some bakers association in the country,” the statement read.
The Supreme Bakers Association characterized the strike as unpatriotic amidst food insecurity and scarcity in the country, advocating instead for constructive dialogue with the government to address the challenges facing the industry.
“All members of the supreme bakers are hereby directed to go about the business of feeding the nation as any contrary action will add to the pains of the overstretched citizens,” the statement concluded.
The stance taken by the Supreme Bakers Association underscores the complexity of navigating industry-wide issues and the importance of collaboration and dialogue in addressing them.
