The Nigerian Senate, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is set to grill the nation’s Service Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday to address the escalating security concerns across the country.

Sen. Tokunbo Abiru, representing the Lagos East Senatorial District in the 9th Nigerian National Assembly, disclosed this development to journalists on Tuesday. He also mentioned the rescheduling of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions meeting from Tuesday to Friday of the same week.

The decision to summon the Service Chiefs follows a recent surge in killings and kidnappings, prompting widespread panic among citizens. Last Tuesday, the Senate decided to summon the Service Chiefs to provide explanations on their efforts to tackle the growing insecurity.

However, Sen. Abiru informed journalists that due to the scheduled appearance of the Service Chiefs, the Senate had postponed the appearance of the CBN governor, Olayemi Cardoso, to Friday.

The committee had initially convened on Tuesday in Room 211 for the scheduled meeting with the CBN governor but later decided to reschedule it to Friday. Sen. Abiru explained, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor on the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week by 9 am.”

He further added, “Communication to this effect would be forwarded to the CBN Governor today (Tuesday) and possibly other government officials managing the economy.”

During the plenary session held earlier, the Senate conducted a two-hour closed-door meeting. Following this, a motion by Senator Ahmad Lawan regarding the passing of Senator Bukar Ibrahim, a former governor of Yobe State, was discussed. The Senate observed a moment of silence to honor the departed senator and appointed a delegation to extend condolences to the Governor of Yobe State and the bereaved family.
