In an effort to address the escalating security concerns within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Minister, has pledged to take decisive action against criminal elements plaguing certain areas of the nation’s capital. The surge in banditry and criminal activities has led to fatalities and abductions in recent months, prompting heightened concerns among residents.

During the flag-off ceremony for the construction of Paikon-Kore Road in the Gwagwalada area, Minister Wike reassured the public of his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating criminals from the region. “I have assured you before that we are going to take this fight headlong. Today, you can see that we are not letting them go. We will make sure they don’t sleep again. If they say we will not sleep, they, too, will not sleep. We are taking the war to them head-on. Let them wait for us; they will see fire for fire,” declared Wike.

President Bola Tinubu, who assumed office last year, had pledged to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, including jihadist activities in the North East, combating criminal militias in the North West, and addressing intercommunal conflicts in central states. However, critics argue that violence has spiraled out of control, with 3,964 recorded abductions since Tinubu took office in May, according to Nigerian risk consultancy SBM Intelligence.

The surge in kidnappings has raised concerns, with experts attributing the phenomenon to the country’s deteriorating economic conditions. Some suggest that desperate Nigerians are turning to criminal activities as a means of generating income. The situation reached a tragic peak at the beginning of the year when five young sisters were abducted near the capital Abuja. Unfortunately, one of the sisters was killed when the ransom deadline expired, sparking widespread national outrage.

Despite the challenges, Minister Wike remains resolute in the fight against insecurity in the FCT, vowing to intensify efforts and confront criminal elements head-on to ensure the safety and well-being of the region’s residents.
