The Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria has unveiled a timetable and activity schedule for the upcoming bye-elections set to take place on February 3, 2024. These bye-elections will cover vacant positions in the Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assemblies.
Umar Ibrahim, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, made the announcement, outlining key dates for the electoral process. The collection of forms is set to commence on December 28, 2023, and will conclude on January 4, 2024. Subsequently, the party’s primaries are scheduled to take place on January 7, 2024.
The party leadership has established fees for both Expression of Interest and Nomination forms. For Senate positions, the fees are set at N1.5 million and N3.5 million, while House of Representatives aspirants will pay N1 million and N2 million. Aspirants for House of Assembly seats are required to pay N100,000 for Expression of Interest and N500,000 for Nomination forms.
In a move to encourage inclusivity, the Labour Party has granted an exemption from payment of fees for Expression of Interest Forms to female aspirants and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWD) aspirants.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled February 3, 2024, for the bye-elections. These elections have been triggered by the resignation or demise of some members of the National and State Houses of Assembly. The vacant positions are distributed across two Senatorial Districts, four Federal Constituencies, and three State Constituencies, spanning nine states in the Federation.
