Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has succumbed to Leukaemia at the age of 67, following an extended struggle with the disease, as disclosed by a family source.
The family source revealed that Akeredolu was under the care of State House doctors until his demise, as his health condition prevented him from being flown abroad for treatment.
“Akeredolu is dead; he died in Lagos. They were looking for dialysis machines to be sent to his secret location in Lagos last week,” the source stated.
Governor Akeredolu had returned to Nigeria in September after a three-month medical leave in Germany. Despite calls for his resignation due to his incapacity to resume work as governor, he stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, attempting to govern the state from there.
In November, Akeredolu proceeded on another leave after being directed by President Bola Tinubu to hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Aiyedatiwa has been acting as the Governor, and peace has since been restored in the state following President Tinubu’s intervention in the political impasse.
