Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers stormed a student lodge at Gandu, Federal University of Lafia, kidnapping at least 17 students. The invasion occurred at 11 pm on Wednesday, leaving an uneasy calm in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Reports indicate that only two students managed to escape the lodge during the attack.
The shocking incident has prompted protests by students of the university, who have taken to the streets in Nasarawa State. The students are expressing their concerns not only about the recent kidnapping but also about the prevalent cases of robbery in the area. They are calling on the university management and security agencies to address and curb the rising insecurity affecting the institution.
Carrying placards with various inscriptions, the protesting students demand the unconditional release of their abducted colleagues and a decisive end to the security challenges within the university environment. The atmosphere remains tense as the students voice their frustration and fear over the escalating incidents.
Abubakar Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the university, confirmed the abduction, stating that the exact number of students taken is yet to be determined. He explained that the affected students were not residing within the school premises but off-campus. “From available information, the number of students abducted is between three to five,” Ibrahim added.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Nasarawa State Command, DSP Ranham Nansel, also confirmed the incident. However, he stated that the command is yet to confirm the actual number of students abducted, and the identity of the victims remains unknown. The security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to address the situation and secure the release of the kidnapped students.
