INEC Announces September 21, 2024, for Edo State Governorship Election as Aspirants Multiply

In a recent statement, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set September 21, 2024, as the date for the Edo State governorship election. The political landscape is currently bustling with activity, as more than 20 aspirants have thrown their hats into the ring, vying to succeed Governor Godwin Obaseki, whose second term is scheduled to conclude on November 12, 2024.

As of Monday, December 4, 2023, the three major political parties in contention for the governorship position are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Labour Party (LP). These parties collectively account for all the aspirants actively campaigning to secure the coveted role.

The breakdown of aspirants within each party is as follows: the PDP boasts four contenders, the LP has five, and the APC leads with 12 candidates. It is anticipated that more individuals will enter the gubernatorial race in the coming weeks, further intensifying the competition.

The aspirants represent a diverse mix of both seasoned politicians and new entrants into the political arena. Additionally, there is a growing call for the governorship ticket to be zoned to Edo Central, a factor that may attract additional contenders to join the race.

Notable aspirants within the APC include Joseph Ikpea, Gideon Obhakhan, Col. David Imuse (retd), Charles Airhiavbere (retd), Monday Okpebholo, Osariemhenn Osunbor, Clem Agba, Kassim Afegbua, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Dennis Idahosa, and Johnson Agbonayinma.

On the PDP front, aspirants include Philip Shaibu, Gideon Ikhine, Asuen Ighodalo, and Matthew Urhoghide.

Meanwhile, the LP has its own lineup of contenders, including Kenneth Imansuagbon, Dorry Okojie, Loretta Ogboror-Okor, Pastor Azemhen Azena, and Olumide Akpata.

With the race for the governorship gaining momentum, political observers are keenly watching how these aspirants will navigate the intricate dynamics of Edo State politics in their quest to secure the top position.
