In a move to safeguard the rights of individuals with disabilities, the House of Representatives has announced plans to provide braille versions of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) booklet in camps across the nation. This initiative aligns with the commitment of the House to protect and promote the dignity and rights of people with disabilities.
During the release of the translated and streamlined version of the 2018 Disability Act on Monday in Abuja, Mr. Bashiru Dawodu, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), made the announcement. Dawodu emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of the disabled community and ensuring their rights are upheld.
Mr. Dawodu shared, “A gentleman translated the NYSC manual into braille. This is the type of amazing resources we have in the community, for somebody to do that. So, we are going to push that and ensure the orientation camp has that. The House will stand up for you, we will ensure your rights and dignity are protected to keep hope alive.”
He further highlighted the House’s concern about the absence of sign language during plenary sessions. Following their request, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas granted approval, marking it as the first use of sign language in Nigeria’s plenary sessions.
This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts of the House of Representatives to create an inclusive and accessible environment for individuals with disabilities, ensuring that their needs and rights are recognized and addressed.
