The political crisis in Ondo State appears to have reached a resolution following a call for peace from President Bola Tinubu. The Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, made a commitment to inclusivity in governance after a meeting with the President at Aso Rock.
Following nearly six hours of deliberations at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, involving state officials and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a decision was reached to halt all impeachment moves against Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa. The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Oladiji Olamide, announced the resolution, emphasizing the commitment to peace and maintaining the status quo.
Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa, expressing his determination to unite warring factions, stated, “I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.” He assured cooperation with all members of the State Executive Council to deliver the “dividend of democracy” to the people of Ondo State.
Aiyedatiwa emphasized mutual respect among officials, urging cooperation between the executive and the legislature. He acknowledged the intervention of President Tinubu, describing the political challenges as part of the larger democratic process.
The Speaker of the House, Olamide, reiterated the resolution’s key points, stating, “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace. Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet, and the Deputy Governor would maintain the status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.”
The resolution also emphasized maintaining the status quo in party leadership within the state. Both Aiyedatiwa and Olamide expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his intervention, signaling a collective commitment to stability and unity within the Ondo State political landscape. The developments mark a potential end to the recent political turbulence, paving the way for collaborative governance and a focus on the welfare of the state’s residents.
