The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Governors held an emergency meeting in Abuja, during which they addressed the Supreme Court’s ruling that confirmed Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25, 2023 presidential election. This verdict effectively marks the conclusion of legal challenges surrounding the presidential election.
The Supreme Court had dismissed the petitions filed by the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, last Thursday, solidifying Bola Tinubu’s victory.
Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and the Governor of Bauchi State, conveyed the outcomes of the meeting, delivering a five-point communique to journalists at the Akwa Ibom Governors Lodge, where the gathering took place. Notably, nine governors were in attendance, and the meeting lasted approximately one hour.
Governor Mohammed highlighted the forum’s concerns regarding the handling of election-related matters in Plateau State, expressing the need for more transparent and just judgments in such cases.
The governors unanimously stressed the importance of reinforcing the PDP as a formidable opposition party with a commitment to advancing democracy, good governance, and accountability in the country.
Furthermore, the PDP Governors made an appeal to the federal government to take immediate action to stabilize the national economy, specifically addressing the need to strengthen the Nigerian naira and control inflation.
Governor Mohammed also acknowledged the presence of Governor Seyi Makinde from Oyo State, who had reportedly not been actively involved in the party’s recent meetings. Despite allegations of working against the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, his attendance at the emergency meeting was appreciated by the PDP Governors.
These developments come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decisive ruling, which has settled the matter of the 2023 presidential election and now shifts the focus to the PDP’s efforts to strengthen its position as an opposition party and address critical economic concerns.
