The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled Thursday, October 26, as the day when it will deliver its ultimate judgments in the election petitions brought forward by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his counterpart from the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi.
The central issue of these petitions is the challenge to the declaration of President Bola Tinubu as the victor of the 2023 presidential election.
Following the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of President Tinubu of the All-Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the fiercely contested election, Atiku and Obi sought legal remedies.
Atiku’s primary claim revolves around allegations of President Tinubu having forged his Chicago State University certificate. As a result, Atiku is seeking the removal of President Tinubu from office.
Dr. Awemeri Festus Akande, the Supreme Court’s Director of Press and Information, confirmed the specified date for the rulings on these petitions. He further assured that adequate security measures have been established to prevent security breaches both within and outside the court premises.
A seven-member panel of Justices, led by Justice John Inyang Okoro, listened to the final arguments presented by legal representatives of the parties involved in the petitions on Monday. The other members of the panel include Justices Uwani Abba-Aji, Mohammed Lawal Garba, Adamu Jauro, Ibrahim Saulawa, Tijani Abubakar, and Emmanuel Agim. Subsequently, the Justices reserved their judgments.
