Kano State Government Bans Six Educational Books Over Inappropriate Content

The Kano State government has taken action to prohibit the use of six educational books in nursery, primary, and secondary schools within the state due to concerns over the presence of inappropriate and sexually explicit content in the materials.

The decision to ban these books was officially announced on Thursday in a statement issued by Baba Abubakar Umar, the director of planning, research, and statistics in the office of the special adviser to the state governor on private and voluntary institutions.

“The Kano State Government wishes to notify operators of both private and voluntary schools in the state that the underlisted books are prohibited for instructional use in our nursery, primary, and secondary schools due to the observed inclusions of inappropriate and sexually explicit contents that are harmful to the morals of our young students,” the announcement stated.

In the statement, it was explained that the Kano State Government had taken this step to safeguard the moral values of young students in nursery, primary, and secondary schools. The books that have been prohibited for instructional use in these educational institutions include:

  1. The Queen Primer (All editions).
  2. A Royal School Series published by Nelson Publishers Limited.
  3. Basic Science For Junior Secondary School by Razat Publishers, 2018 Edition (JSS3).
  4. Active Basic Science, 2014 Edition By Tola Anjorin, Okechukwu Okolo, Philias Yara, Bamidele Mutiu, Fatima Koki, Lydia Gbagu.
  5. Basic Science and Technology for Junior Secondary School 1, 2, and 3 by W.K. Hamzat, S.Bakare.
  6. New Concept English For Senior Secondary Schools For SSS2, Revised Edition (2018 Edition) by J.Eyisi, A.Adekunle, T.Adepolu, F. Ademola Adeoye, Q.Adams, and J.Eto.
  7. Basic Social Studies For Primary Schools by B.J.Obebe, D.M.Mohammed, S.N.Nwosu, J.A. Adeyanju, and H.Carbin.

The director, Mr. Umar, highlighted the shared responsibility of educators and role models in providing quality education while nurturing virtuous character among students.

This decision by the Kano State government reflects the ongoing efforts to ensure that educational materials used in schools align with cultural and moral values while providing students with appropriate content for their academic development.
