Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have occupied the Lagos State Assembly premises, where members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are currently protesting.

The protest comes after angry protesters pulled down the gate of the National Assembly in Abuja to gain entrance into the complex. NLC, who had occupied the National Assembly building, had pleaded with the security officer to open the gate and allow angry workers to express their displeasure, but their refusal led to violence.

In photos shared online, DSS operatives were seen on the premises of the Lagos State Assembly complex as demonstrators gathered at the gate’s entrance. The move might be a possible means to stop any attempt at the destruction of government properties or violence in the area.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State chapter of the NLC has demanded N200,000 as the national minimum wage following the removal of fuel subsidy. An NLC leader stated this during the protest which started under Ikeja under-bridge in Lagos.

The protest is ongoing and it is unclear how long it will last. However, the DSS’s presence at the Lagos State Assembly premises suggests that the government is taking the protest seriously and is prepared to take action to prevent any violence.
