The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of a suspected counterfeit toothpaste being sold as the registered ORACARE+ Toothpaste.
The agency issued the warning in a statement published on September 14, following a formal complaint and market intelligence indicating that the suspected fake product was being distributed in Nigeria.
According to NAFDAC, surveillance carried out at Ojuwoye Market in Mushin, Lagos, showed that the counterfeit product closely resembles the genuine ORACARE+ Toothpaste in both packaging and appearance, making it difficult for consumers to tell them apart.
The regulator warned that the suspected counterfeit toothpaste may not meet required quality and safety standards and could therefore pose health risks to consumers.
NAFDAC said it has commenced surveillance operations, directing its zonal directors and state coordinators to investigate the availability and distribution of the product and take appropriate regulatory measures.
The agency urged consumers, retailers, distributors and healthcare professionals to be vigilant when purchasing ORACARE+ Toothpaste, particularly by checking the product packaging and source.
“Purchase toothpaste products only from reputable and authorised outlets. Carefully examine product packaging and source of supply before purchase,” NAFDAC advised.
It further urged members of the public and healthcare providers to report suspected sales of the counterfeit product to the nearest NAFDAC office, through its hotline 0800-162-3322, by email or via the Med Safety App.
