The 36 state governors under the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) are considering a new initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs for Nigerians through the proposed National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP).

The proposal was discussed at the NGF meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, which was chaired by the Forum’s Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, the governors received a presentation on the state-led CNG programme, which seeks to pass the lower operating costs associated with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles on to commuters through reduced fares.

The proposed programme would involve state governments supporting the conversion of vehicles to CNG, providing fleets and developing necessary infrastructure, while participating transport operators would make commitments to reduce passenger fares.

The governors acknowledged the potential of the initiative to ease the financial pressure caused by high transportation costs but said further consideration would be given to its financing and implementation framework.

The Forum said the programme could provide a practical way of ensuring that the benefits of cheaper CNG operations translate into more affordable public transportation for citizens.

The NGF meeting also considered opportunities for states to participate in major African trade and investment events.

The governors received a presentation from the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, on the opportunities available to states through CANEX Weekend 2026 and the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027, both scheduled to take place in Lagos.

According to the statement, the governors recognised the potential of the events to showcase investment-ready projects, promote Nigerian exports and tourism, and provide opportunities for state-owned Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to connect with investors and buyers from across Africa and beyond.

“Governors noted the platform’s potential to showcase investment-ready projects, promote local exports and tourism, and connect State MSMEs with African and global investors and buyers,” the statement said.

The Forum further assured the minister of its support for the successful hosting and achievement of the objectives of the two events.

The proposed CNG transit programme is expected to receive further consideration by the governors as discussions continue on how best to finance and implement the initiative across participating states.
